My Story

Dr. Miao Ma earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and a Graduate Certificate in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Kansas in USA. She holds a Master’s degree in Piano Performance from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in the UK, where she also pursued studies in harpsichord, and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a minor in flute performance from the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China. Her principal teachers include Michael Kirkendoll, Scott McBride Smith, and MeiYi Foo, among other distinguished mentors who have shaped her musical artistry.

As an active pianist on the international stage, Dr. Ma has performed extensively across the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, appearing in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Curtis Theatre in Los Angeles, and the Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall in the UK. She has been featured and interviewed by major media outlets including ‘New York Weekly’ and ‘CanvasRebel’. Dr. Ma was invited to perform for His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom and participated in the planning and artistic coordination of royal concert events—demonstrating not only exceptional performance skills but also strong artistic leadership.In addition to her solo career, Dr. Ma is an accomplished chamber musician and collaborative pianist, frequently performing with internationally renowned vocalists and Grammy-nominated instrumentalists. Her musical collaborations reflect a deep interest in exploring cross-cultural narratives and expressive dialogues within diverse artistic contexts.

Dr. Ma is a multiple prizewinner at international piano competitions, including the Great Composers Competition in Group Brahms. Her performances are distinguished by their clarity of structure, poetic lyricism, and intellectual depth, uniting analytical insight with emotional sensitivity. She has a particular passion for the music of Nikolai Medtner, Aaron Copland, Johannes Brahms, and Frédéric Chopin, bringing to these composers a unique interpretive voice marked by philosophical reflection and narrative depth. Her doctoral research, “Musical Storytelling in the Fairy Tales & Forgotten Melodies of Nikolai Medtner,” has been published in both American and Chinese academic journals, including Lingnan Music Journal.

As a dedicated educator with over a decade of international teaching experience across China, the UK, and the US, Dr. Ma’s students have received top prizes in competitions such as the Steinway Youth Piano Competition, Henle International Piano Competition, and Little Mozart Competition, and have been admitted to leading universities including the University of York, University of Sheffield, and University of Arizona. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and serves as a piano competition adjudicator. Dr. Ma is well-versed in multiple examination systems, including ABRSM and California Certificate of Merit (CM) programs.

Her pedagogical philosophy integrates the strengths of Western structural discipline and Eastern artistic intuition, emphasizing individualized instruction tailored to each student’s needs. She believes that music education transcends technique, aiming to nurture both intellect and emotion. Dr. Ma guides students to understand the logic, aesthetics, and philosophy behind musical expression, encouraging them to discover their own authentic artistic voices. Whether on stage or in the classroom, she approaches music with openness, reason, and imagination—pursuing beauty not as a result, but as a lifelong dialogue between sound and soul.

马淼于美国堪萨斯大学音乐学院获得钢琴演奏博士学位，并获得钢琴教学法学位。曾在英国皇家威尔士音乐戏剧学院获取钢琴演奏硕士学位，并辅修羽管键琴。于中国星海音乐学院获得音乐教育学位，辅修长笛。她先后跟随Michael Kirkendoll教授、Scoot Smith教授以及MeiYi Foo教授等大师深造。
